Revised Rorschachs

  1. in class, talked about leaving the "idea" that brought you here behind, and proceeding with the visual work itself. e.g., a book, each page a different selection of the components (for instance, of the colored piece), selected randomly (assign each "line" a number, and then select those numbers at random, and show only those lines, laid down (so to speak) in the order in which they are called (so that which lines cross over which lines is also random).
    and/or, these over a picture (presumably halftone gray) of a tree, for example (its branches, leaves), with which the lines would interact.
    we talked about "stupid" ideas, e.g., Dieter Roth (his book whose pages are a grid of commas or single quotation marks, with a different drawing/doodle in/around those commas on every page.
    stupid, but very interesting.

    important to get away from "illustrating" a term found in wikipedia or elsewhere, and then having nothing more to say about it.
    stick with the "stupid" material, see what ideas come into view as you work with it.
